I have wanted to paint
this for ages, if just to find a legitimate use to incorporate
a glow-in-the-dark layer. The sign will charge during the day
and emit a very clear glow in a dark environment. The power of
the glow will diminish if you wait for the day to turn to night
but placing it in front of a light source for a minute or two
will result in a great glowing in darkness.
I wanted to make this piece feel as 'real' as possible (although
see the disclaimer warning below), so I have painted this onto
2mm thick aluminium, which means it has a reassuring heft that
you wouldn't get from canvas or paper. As such, painting on a
non-absorbent surface is very tricky and I should let you know
that tiny imperfections can occur but the piece's integrity holds
true.
Disclaimer: This is not to be used
in a situation where a genuine emergency fire exit sign is required.
This is a piece of art, not a piece of emergency wayfinding, and
should not be hung in a place where confusion may arise.
