IT STARTED AS A JOKE
It started as a joke but things quickly escalated and before we knew it, all paint broke lose and people were taking sides, sparring with paint brushes, chasing after each other madly and taking hostages. We never did finish painting that room...
This piece is the first in a trilogy of pieces. The
second is 'And I'm Not Going
To Take This Anymore' and the third piece is 'But
This Is Not How It Ends'.
I remember this was the first piece I had really, truly challenged myself with as it was so packed with figures and the largest painting I had attempted up until then. It was also a nervous affair as 'It Started As A Joke' was the first screen print edition I had ever released. The screen print was a bit of a nightmare to get done in fact.
The studio I had approached to produce the edition ended up delivering a stack of prints where the various colour separations were not registered (lined up) properly. Hell, even the colours were way off what I had specified. After a bit of verbal fighting, I managed to get my money back and found a printers that managed to do a fantastic job on them.
It would definitely be interesting to tackle this piece again, as it was completed towards the end of 2009. You can look at 'But This Is Not How It Ends' and see that I've gotten a bit better at drawing liquid things. I think there's also a number of poses I'd love to rejig because they look a little awkward to me these days.
Unfortunately I made this piece before I had really got into using video, so there's no process video to see here, unlike the other two pieces in the series.
The images below include the stenciled and screen printed versions of the piece. You can place your cursor over any of the images to find out the title of a piece.
