"Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do 'practice'?" - George Carlin
In medieval times, plague doctors were hired by entire villages or towns to rid them of the rampant plague. Poor and rich were treated alike, though the doctor’s effectiveness was severely questionable. They dressed in various layers of clothing and stuffed herbs into the long nose of the mask to ward off the contagious disease, which was as useful as their treatment.
We particularly had a lot of fun drawing the frame for this piece and incorporating hidden imagery into it, from the skull at the top to the lantern at the bottom. We also added a useful mounting plate on the reverse, so it’s immediately ready for hanging!
Please note: there are handpainted elements in this edition and as a result, the piece you receive may be slightly different from the one pictured here.
