Maybe it'll be easier if I put this on the floor and stand on it...
Thank you, Anna B, for your suggestion of 'Lost' for the first Wildcard Wednesday! We've been out enjoying the sun today and got a few of these up. A lot of the colleges here in Oxford had their open days today, so there were a lot of fresh faced kids walking looking very lost.
Yes, very interesting, it's an old form of language, dear Watson!
Thanks to L-Roy Royston Patrick for his suggestion of 'clue' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. We’re loving this project, will be asking for a new one this Saturday.
War never changes, nor do boys.
Thanks to Steve Baxter for his suggestion of 'warrior' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. It's great to have a regular reason to get stickers up in the street as this is where everything began in the first place.
The summer holiday is the perfect opportunity to do...absolutely nothing. And I will enjoy doing absolutely nothing until the bitter end.
We thought since all the kids have recently finished school for the summer, this'd be the perfect Wildcard Wednesday sticker, suggested by Geert Oxi. It's been a while since we experienced the bliss of the summer holidays, stretching out ahead of you free and seemingly infinite.
Whilst not evident from the photo, a nice bonus is that this sticker's up on the perimeter of a school. Won't last long but couldn't resist the spot or the bold 'no entry' sign.
The slow eating the slower!
Thanks to Asboluv for his suggestion for this week's Wildcard Wednesday piece and to everyone else for voting for it. Can't say it was an easy piece to come up with but you can't go wrong with zombies!
We came, we saw, we kicked its ass!
Thank you to Steve Newbury for suggesting 'I ain't afraid of no ghosts' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. As soon we saw the Ghostbusters reference, we knew it was probably going to be the one.
There is nothing of value at the summit except the bragging rights that you reached it. Such is mountaineering.
Thank you to Cassim Barton for suggesting 'all downhill from here' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. We like snapping shots of possible spots for pieces and we saw this one a couple weeks back. Perfect for a mountain expedition!
And you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?
Thanks to Felix Gegenteilvonglatt for suggesting 'That Is A Tasty Burger' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. We will always endeavour to find the closest burger place when we're out. It's almost shameful. Almost.
C'mon, Dad, this wasn't even funny the first time...
Thanks to Kieran Wilson for suggesting 'ride it like you stole it' for #9 in the Wildcard Wednesday series.
Bonus points if you can guess what famous image we based the tricycle on...
We thought we'd bring a bit of animation to this week's Wildcard Wednesday, as Cat Newbury suggested 'dance like nobody's watching'. We stuck a series of stickers up and when viewed in sequence, animates to become a very happy dancer.
Phone in hand, it's a dance known across the world. Facing different directions in the street like an angry satellite. Surreptitiously pointing your phone at the window on a moving train. And most frustratingly of all, at home, where you bring your phone to the router shouting, "Look! Look! It's right here, connect! Why won't you connect?!".
Thanks to Stuart Hanley for suggesting 'damn WiFi' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. Next week will mark three months of all this and no signs of stopping. Another opportunity to suggest something this Saturday.
No easy answer.
We tend to keep politics out of my work, however a few photos lately that have struck home. We simultaneously think that it takes a seriously shitty situation to totally leave your country and risk your family's life traveling on ill-equipped dinghies on the open sea. On the other hand, how do you support refugees at a time when the government is unbridled with their austerity measures on those who already live here? There's no easy answer and I'm not preaching for either stances.
We know we won't ultimately do anything because we’re either too selfish or because we’re overcome with a sense of powerlessness. We don't really know, it's hard to tell the difference between the two.
Thanks to Mark Cullen for suggesting 'refugee' this week for Wildcard Wednesday.
Hard fought every step.
We’ll keep this brief as we’re at the Australia v Fiji game but thanks to Daniel Powell for suggesting 'swing low, sweet chariot' this week. It might be the Millenium stadium but this was too good of an opportunity to miss.
...this was not the natural order of things.
Thanks to Cathy Mauger-Jones and Felix Rau for respectively suggesting 'victory' and 'defeat' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. Thought we'd combine the two for this one!
Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho.
Thank you to Noe Lebourg for suggesting this week's Wildcard Wednesday piece with 'yippie-ki-yay, motherfucker'. For those that aren't familiar with the line, it's from the 1988 classic Die Hard. We won't talk about any films that came after the third one but the first is just perfect.
Stuck between a cutlass and a sea place.
A thank you to Hayley Lewis for suggesting 'closer to the edge' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. You can't go wrong with pirates.
“Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.”
Thanks to Mark Tarrant for suggesting 'hoverboard' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. We don't know if you were referencing Back To The Future II or the swegways that have been in the news lately but we were planning to release a screen print for today and so killed two birds with one stone.
The wee haggis sometimes need help finding their way but they'll get to where they're going to in the end.
A thank you to Keith Lack for suggesting 'haggis migration' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. We've not been to Scotland yet but this sort of thing goes on all the time. We also now have bagpipes in my digital library of items, which is nice.
The easiest catch for the sneakiest cat.
Thank you to Dan Bayliss for suggesting 'what fish' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. We got a handful of these up along the Thames river today, just before the light of day gave out and the opportunity for the photo was gone!
Come to think of it, I can't remember how I got this carrot, but I'll be damned if I relent to these rabbits!
So after a relentless campaign by Phil Smith, his suggestion of 'no rabbits allowed' has finally become a street sticker for Wildcard Wednesday. The vote was tied between Dan Bayliss and Phil but seeing as Dan's suggestion was picked last week, we opted for Phil's.
Each rabbit represents each week you suggested 'no rabbits allowed' for the wildcard, Phil!
It would be all too easy to focus on the deaths from the recent Paris attacks but let us celebrate life. Those killed last Friday evening were out enjoying themselves, with friends, with other like-minded people, un joie de vivre. This is the human spirit.
We were at Le Bataclan to catch band a month after the Hebdo attacks happened. The same club attacked by the gunmen. How easy could we have suffered the same fate? We have a short clip on my phone of the band playing on stage; how quickly could that have been interrupted by gunfire and screaming? It scares us if we think about it too much.
No! There is no use in fear of death, chaos or the unknown. We cannot control those things. However, we are in control of our lives! We will enjoy life for all it will give, for each drop it will relent. There are too many of us who love living life to ever be conquered!
Thank you Paul Cornhill for suggesting 'liberte, egalite, fraternite' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday.
Right boys, that cat can't have gone far. You head left, you go right and I'll sit here sniffing my bum. Let's go!
Thank you to Paul Stone for suggesting 'hide and seek' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. Despite all our digital editing prowess, this photo refused to warm up. Truly, it is winter. Every time we head out to get fresh stickers up, we’re dubious about finding a new spot but something always thankfully reveals itself. We guess we’re always looking for a different scene each time, so that tends to blinker you to other spots.
...I don't mind all the travelling but I wish we could get a better company car.
Thanks to Keith Lack for suggesting 'send in the clowns' for this week's 23rd Wildcard Wednesday! What we lack in size, we make up for in placement!
This was a mutually beneficial relationship.
Thanks to Aimee Cornhill for her suggestion of 'what goes around comes around' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday! She's not fussed about Facebook but still wanted to make a suggestion and so she emailed it in to us over the weekend. The sticker is maybe a little rough around the edges but we'll develop this 'cyclical sticker' idea a bit more in the future.
In one sense, the moon was quite far away but in another, it was pretty close in the grand scheme of things.
Thank you to Joscha Erbis for suggesting 'shoot for the moon' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday! There's this hole in a bus shelter wall that lights up at night (there's an illuminated advert on the front) and we've been waiting for a chance to use the spot. It seems fitting to cast it as the moon in this scene!
All those little glasses of sherry add up across a night and, even with his portly physique, can take it's toll on Santa.
Merry Christmas guys, enjoy the break, the food (and drink), family and friends! Thanks to Dave Bowcutt for suggesting 'bad santa' for this week's festive Wildcard Wednesday. The dogs are on shift this year!
It's the only new year's resolution that matters.
It's been a great year for all sorts of reasons and 2016 will probably be alright too. We’re mostly looking forward to the nights now growing shorter, as you'll have noticed the past few wildcards have been at night!
Cheers to Graeme Mulvaney for suggesting 'resolution' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday.
We went to see the latest Star Wars film on Christmas eve. It made us realize it was the first time we had seen the yellow scrolling Star Wars text on the silver screen. We had seen it parodied so much, we thought we were watching a satire and let out a little laugh. Before long though, we were well into it and loved how it harked back to the older films with the dated wipes!
Thanks to Siobhan Blackmore for suggesting 'a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday.
...don't it make you feel alive.
Thanks to Alex Den Boer for suggesting this week's lyric themed Wildcard Wednesday, which comes from LCD Soundsystem's song 'Get Innocuous'. We love their music but clearly not enough to know they split up five years ago and have only recently gotten back together.
Would have to say this is my favourite of theirs. Anyway, we've drawn the man James Murphy abstractly surrounded by his music.
As a side note, we know a number of you suggested David Bowie for this week's wildcard but outside of the widely popular tracks, we can't profess any connection with his music. It would've been very easy as the man was incredibly iconic but would've felt insincere.
It's the English way.
There's no doubt that the best way to combat these cold days is a cup of tea. It was so cold last night, we had to resort to using a watering can to wash our screen printing screens because the garden hose had frozen solid. The thing wouldn't even uncurl!
Thank you to Cathy Mauger-Jones for suggesting this week's caffeinated Wildcard Wednesday piece!
I'm sorry to have kept you waiting, but I'm afraid my walk has become rather sillier recently, and so it takes me rather longer to get to work.
One of us remembers watching 'The Holy Grail' and 'Life Of Brian' on VHS a lot as a kid. And long before actually seeing 'Monty Python's Flying Circus', I read all of the scripts for the sketches from a (very thick) book. The Pythons are a core part of our sense of humour, as we’re sure is the case for so many people in the UK and abroad.
Thanks to Loki Llywarch for suggesting 'ministry of silly walks' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. Our mind was made up when we saw this suggestion!
He's got to be in here somewhere...
Thanks to Xact Amondo for suggesting 'it started with a kiss' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. We know you were referencing The Killers but we’re giving you frogs.
One last ride...
Wildcard Wednesday has been temporarily usurped by Super Bowl Sunday. We’re busy later in the week and as soon as we saw Dominic Bubb suggest 'the hail mary' for this week (thank you for the suggestion man), we got started on this little piece.
One of us follows rugby and football at international levels but you can't beat the spectacle, characters and narrative of each and every NFL game. Whilst I support the Saints (nevermind the past couple of years, we're coming back strong next season) (and Mrs Pahnl supports the Ravens), seeing Manning and Cam go at it is going to be good. Thirteen years difference between the two of them, maybe Manning's last game, can't wait!
Now, I'm off to cook some chilli and stick some beers in the fridge.
I liked your enthusiasm but there's room for improvement.
Thank you to Kieran Wilson for suggesting 'toilet training' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. This'll be the last sticker we slap in Oxford for a while as we'll be finally living in Birmingham properly next week. We’ll be glad to have it all done as the new house has been stealing a lot of our time that we could be spending on new work!
This doesn't change anything; I'm still going to claw you on the way down. But thank you.
Thanks to Craig Tapecat McCudden for suggesting this week's palette themed Wildcard Wednesday of 'red, orange, yellow'. We're a little late with this one today because we're still not properly set up in our new city of Birmingham. We also need to start a new mental library of interestings spots on the street!
And the bold are hungry!
Thanks to Filippos Giannakopoulos for suggesting 'fortune favours the bold' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday stenciled sticker. We got a handful of these up around Birmingham's 'Thinktank' science museum inbetween bouts of rain.
The best pizza is always the first slice and the last slice.
Thanks to Jess Douglas for suggesting 'leftover pizza' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday sticker. Both of us here love American food (see week 08) so much so, we'll hunt it out in whatever city or country we're in.
We even managed to get a Dominos pizza delivered to us whilst on holiday in Japan a few years back. Sliced potato was probably the weirdest topping but would've been filled with regret if we hadn't tried Japanese Dominos!
We charged our 3210 exhibit back in 2003 and, as you can see, three bars of battery still remain. Exquisite!
Thanks to James Thomas for suggesting 'it belongs in a museum' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. I only got an iPhone 4 two years ago but before that, I was using my first and only ever mobile phone: a Nokia 1112. Depending on a text's vocabulary, it could fit about six words on screen at a time.
No one parks here at night, so I just set my phone to buzz before the day shift come on and no one's the wiser.
Thanks to Miguel Estrada for suggesting 'sleeping at work' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. Starting to build a mental catalogue of good sticker spots now that we've been living in Birmingham for five weeks. Slapping stickers up is getting easier, although we still need to sort out the paint shed. A hint of spring wouldn't hurt!
It's bad enough that he's escaped...but with a spoon?!
Thanks to Richard Turner for suggesting 'persistence pays off' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. You've been badgering us for five months (specifically, twenty weeks) with this suggestion and so here! Here's your pay off, Ryk!
He had managed to borrow his dad's outfit but the act was a little tricky, what with the house cat full of contempt.
Thanks to James Oliver for suggesting 'ringmaster' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. Quite a cat filled day as we've been working on a new cat screen print today!
...must show...everyone...how...cool...I am...
Thank you to Judith Hall for suggesting 'check in' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. #YOUHADTOBETHERE
Starting was the hard part and it was best not to think too much about it.
Thanks to Matthew Harrison for suggesting 'breaking the fourth wall' for this week's instalment of Wildcard Wednesday. If pieces painted themselves, we'd be totally fine with that.
It made nipping out for milk at rush hour so much easier...
Thank you to Neil Morris for suggesting 'above it all' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. We were only looking for a dark background to slap this up on, so that the jetpack's blast wasn't lost, but this was a handy spot.
Does the scythe not give it away?
Thanks to Helen Wand for suggesting 'who did you say you were again?' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. Can't say we planned to stick this up on such a hellish background but that's the beauty of the street!
One minute you're eating an ice cream and then the next minute, you're eating an ice cream in the rain.
Thanks to Felix Rau for suggesting 'that time of the year again' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday sticker. We really, really hope those three days of bliss weren't the entirety of 2016's summer.
This one's definitely heading to the glue factory.
We had a lot of fun with this week's Wildcard Wednesday sticker. We use clear vinyl for my slaps, which meant we could paint the black hidden soldiers first, then their white outline (along with the reverse side of the Troy soldier) and the inside of the horse, before painting the exterior of the horse and Troy soldier again. When stuck onto glass, you can see both sides!
Thanks to Jon Stroud for suggesting 'trojan horse' for this week, great suggestion.
Now you see me...
Thanks to Nathan Jones for suggesting 'the invisible man' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday sticker. Thought I'd make a super brief video of the process behind the sticker, watch it at below. We were just glad the sign was still there when we returned.
Thanks to Richard Turner for suggesting 'temper tantrum' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. Sometimes coming up with a sticker for the week is easy and other times, you just want to scrap it all. The two came together this week.
The promo for those early fights weren't the most dignified...
Thanks to Beau Pope (and Xact Amondo) for suggesting 'float like a butterfly, sting like a bee' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. Muhammed Ali died a few days ago and, whilst we share no affinity with the man, we couldn't resist putting him in a bee suit.
Falling wasn't an issue but coming to a sudden stop was a bigger concern.
Thanks to Quentin Felix for suggesting 'fly high or die trying' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday! We don't know if it was a direct Icarus reference or not but we leapt on the mental image of all the waxy feathers falling away.
No one is punctual these days.
Thanks to Keith Lack for suggesting 'the end is nigh' for this week's Wildcard Wednesday. So there's bad news and good news. Bad news: this is indeed the last wildcard sticker for now but you never know when it might come back.
Thank you so much to everyone that spent a little bit of time every Saturday to suggest something for Wildcard Wednesday. This project would’ve been nothing without your weird and wonderful suggestions we received every week.
Truth be told, we were a little anxious people might lose interest after a couple weeks. However it turns out (not surprisingly) that most people love spouting nonsense when given half a chance!
We even kept a list of everyone who made a suggestion, whether it became a sticker or not. So let us say thank you to Aaron Spirituality Art, Abe Von Slefritrets, Adam Cross, Adam Lynch, Adam Nyhuis, Adam Watkins, Aidan Ryan, Aimee Cornhill, AJ Green, Alex Charpin, Alex Den Boer, Alex Stanhope, Alice Burns, Alice Lebourg, Alison Fabienne, Alison Thomas, Alison Thompson, Alwyn Owen, Amy Abrams, Amy Holt, Andrew G Gill, Andrew Peirce, Andy Beveridge, Andy Dukey Duke, Andy Holdcroft, Andy Lok, Anil Mistry, Anna B, Anthony Aguinaldo, Arthur Coppens, Asboluv Artist, Auke van der Plaat, Autotelic, B.a.
