(Check out the video below to see how obsessive I got about filming traffic crossings)
We went on holiday to Japan and the weirdest thing we saw wasn't the vending machines (they're just vending machines), that they use three different 'alphabets' (although thank you so much for that) or that the plates of fake food made from wax in the windows of restaurants (that's just good sense).
It's the traffic crossings.
I've never seen anything like it elsewhere. London, New York, Paris, wherever: people will cross everywhere. But in Japan, a zebra crossing could be barely a meter wide with not a car in sight and some desperately late person still won't cross.
Whereas I'm the sort of person who likes to make my time count. I like being efficient. It's a thrill. If the CNC machine is cutting wooden shapes out, whilst I'm trimming timber down for a frame AND there's things drying away in the drawers, I'm in heaven. It feels good to fire on all cylinders.
But a holiday shouldn't be about maximizing every single minute, so having to wait at each and every crossing kept me in line during the trip. It's okay to take my time and relax. It's okay to do one thing at a time. Or even no things at a time. Imagine that!
