This path seems a bit…long?

We take great pride in the fact that we screen print all our own work in our print studio and have done so since 2014. Whilst the majority of artists use the services of professional printers to produce their editions (and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, it's a space costly and hair-yankingly-nuanced affair), the freedom to experiment at our own pace is invaluable.

In printing the edition, we were able to really appreciate how deceptively simple the interlocking shapes of Reutersvärd's triangle are. Each layer of colour had to line up perfectly or the illusion would be ruined. If something was more than half a millimeter out of place, the whole thing would've been a failure.

The colours themselves were a complicated process too, as the three sections that make up the impossible triangle have been printed with a split fountain. What does that mean? Well normally when we screen print a layer, we use a single, solid hand mixed colour for the entire area. Split fountain is a fancy term for applying two or more colours onto the screen in such a way that when it's printed, you get a gorgeous blend of the two colours.

Great care has to be taken to keep the gradient smooth and consistent throughout the print run. The result is a satisfying gradient that adds to the illusion of the triangle, which is made all the better for knowing that it's achieved via an entirely analogue process.
