Why are mirrors so interesting?

That’s what Figure discovers in the latest animation, which you can watch at the bottom of this page.

I think it’s the same reason why our eyes are often first drawn to ourselves in photos (or is that just me? uh oh), it’s just fascinating to see yourself, right?

Of course what you see looking back at you in a mirror depends on a lot of things and it’s not always about what has materially happened to you either. Although it's hard to look past a bad haircut.

But if I’m a bit anxious, I might see a few blocked pores that definitely need to be fixed (made worse) but then if I’m happy, well, maybe now I’m justifying an extra biscuit later on.

Obviously OBVIOUSLY you don’t need me explaining emotions to you, I know that, but I thought it’d be fun to come up with ways to show how Figure was feeling moment to moment and I haven't done any handpainted effects up until now.

And you may recognize the title of the piece is from the following snippet from Walt Whitman’s ‘Song of Myself’ (and a snippet it’ll remain as the whole poem is over 15,000 words long, a lot of which I won’t pretend to understand) which goes…

Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)

…and I really, really like that bit. It’s important to give yourself permission to be contradictory or inconsistent. We are all the things we feel at any moment and each moment is just as valid as the next...even if you're a small little wooden figure, you are still large.
