Like many phrases that bubble up between two people when they've known each other for a long time, I can't remember when 'now you know' came to be. But once I noticed it, I realized we say it a lot.
It might be about a new range of frozen french fries that were finally in stock. Or it could be about the inflatable kayak we finally bought and just paddled down the canal for a couple hours. But after a disappointment, however big or small, one of us will eventually nudge the other and say comfortingly 'well, now you know'.
Of course, in the moment, it doesn't really help. It's like telling someone to just stop being angry or to grow an extra finger. It doesn't actually feel actionable. But when the moment passes, you realize it's nice to have finally understood 'it', even if 'it' wasn't particularly good.
And now you have new space for the next thing, which invariably comes along before you know it. And this next thing might be just as good as you suspect.
After all, you're much wiser now...
