My first time was eight years ago.
Using a jigsaw, I nervously cut a triangle out of a sheet of plywood and filed and sanded the wobbly edges down to resemble something slightly more geometric. Then I sprayed a 'danger electricity' sign onto this alien three sided shape, with the figure doing some DIY (probably without the appropriate certification) and that was my first ever wooden piece.
I say 'alien' because up to that point, I had almost exclusively painted onto stretched canvases in the studio. They have their advantages, of course: they can be big whilst remaining light and they can even be rolled up. They also just feel more legit because greats like Rembrandt and Van Gogh painted on them.
However, canvases are often square or rectangular and they define where the piece begins and strictly ends. Back then I think subconsciously (but very consciously now) I didn't enjoy that sort of approach and so cutting a triangle all those years ago was a lot like the butterfly flapping wings triggering a tornado elsewhere...a tornado that sounds a lot like a shopvac and CNC machine, in fact.
And all this was my exact train of thought when I saw the original 2017 piece again last week. I also thought to myself 'I could make it even better now...' and (fortunately for my ego) I think I did. So if you also love things that aren't strict-boring-squares and...playing with electricity? Well, you’re in luck!
Disclaimer: This is a piece of art and should not be used in any context where there is a risk of electrocution or danger.
